da brdice: Everton beat Burnley 2-0 on Friday night to keep their slim hopes of qualifying for the Europa League alive and, in doing so, kept their fifth successive clean sheet at home.
On the chalkboard
Marco Silva’s side have enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent weeks, particularly at home.
In an impressive run of games, the Toffees have drawn 0-0 with bitter rivals Liverpool, beaten Chelsea 2-0, Arsenal 1-0, Manchester United 4-0 and, now, Sean Dyche’s side.
Their improvement at the back means that they have let in just 21 goals at home thus far this term, fewer than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United and eighth-placed Wolves.
Silva’s side, indeed, are enjoying an excellent season at home and have lost just five times; the same amount as third-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
It is their away form, however, where the work is needed. They have lost nine times on the road and would be 11th in the table if only games away from home counted.
Silva, then, knows the changes he needs to make next season.
Fortress Goodison is all well and good
Having Goodison Park as a fortress is all well and good but if Everton want to achieve their aims, they need to bring their away form into line.
Compare their home record against United, Arsenal and Chelsea – three wins, to an aggregate score of 7-0 – to their away record, where they have lost 2-1, 2-0 and drawn 0-0.
They have also lost to the likes of already-relegated Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton on the road.
It simply doesn’t add up to a top-seven finish.
They are currently eighth, one point behind Wolves, despite playing a game more. Unless Silva can whip his side into shape on the road, they won’t be climbing any higher.
