da dobrowin: The Eagles landed in Portugal on Sunday to watch the Primeira Liga encounter at the Estadio do Dragao between FC Porto and Feirense, with a focus on the hosts’ midfielder Hector Herrera, per reports picked up in A Bola, via Sport Witness, but the Mexican is not the midfielder Selhurst Park should see.
What’s the story?
A Bola is a local newspaper in Porto and Sports Witness claim that the paper reported that scouts from the south London club were in attendance at the Portuguese league match on Sunday.
It is believed that the player Roy Hodgson had his men prioritising was 28-year-old Hector Herrera, who they had already cast judgment over when in Portugal for the Benfica and Tondela league fixtures as well as the Champions League tie with Galatasaray.
Their most recent trip, meanwhile, saw the central midfielder only feature for 26 minutes as a second-half substitute for Jesus Manuel Corona. But the journey would have been worthwhile to witness the display put on by Oliver Torres.
Why Torres instead of Herrera?
Herrera may have five years more experience on his side and regularly plays as an attacking or defensive midfield option along with a strict central spot, but the younger Porto midfielder offers someone who can pick a pass even better than his teammate.
Torres’ favoured style of play sees the 23-year-old prefer to lift balls over the top or into the channels, which is ideal when you have players like Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend ahead, rather than the Mexico international who often likes to play it short.
The 5ft 8in ace may have not yet earned a senior international call-up for Spain, but the Atletico Madrid product looks to be better suited to fitting into the Palace side who were getting back to their best against Arsenal at the weekend.
Should Palace change their focus from Herrera to Torres, they could potentially pick the Spaniard up for just £10.8m, as per his Transfermarkt valuation.
