In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Arsenal striker John Hartson has had his say on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks, and believes one aspect of his game is letting him down.
The 23-year-old has established himself as a regular in Spurs’ starting XI so far this term, starting all six of their Premier League matches as well as their Champions League group opener against Olympiacos last week, as per Transfermarkt.
The England international has largely impressed as well, and was one of the only players to receive any praise from fans of the north London outfit after they surrendered a two-goal lead in Athens.
A steady presence in midfield who offers work-rate and reliability in possession of the ball, as shown by his average passing success of 92.4% in the top flight in 2019/29, Hartson believes he must do one thing if he wants to improve even further.
The Welshman told FFC: “I think he’s (Winks) got to do more. I’d like to see Harry do a little bit more. He’s got to start getting the ball, taking the game by the scruff of the neck and controlling games from the centre of midfield. I don’t see him doing that.”

He’s got a point.
Yes, he is steady as mentioned previously, but he is yet to prove that he is outstanding in any one area as a midfield player.
The next step for Winks now he looks to have firmly worked his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans is to really begin to dictate the play, and have a bigger impact when some of his Tottenham teammates might not be making one.
If he does succeed in imposing himself more, he could go on to become a key player for both his club and his country in the coming years.
