Liverpool must beat Tottenham to the signature of PSV Eindhoven star Hirving Lozano, who would provide Sadio Mane with some much-needed competition to ensure that he is performing to his maximum.
What’s the word, then?
Well, it is no secret that Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan, with Spanish media station Don Balon claiming that the north London side are readying a big-money move for the Mexican goalscorer.
His interest in the forward will have only grown stronger after the 23-year-old’s 13 goals across all competitions so far this season, as well as his seven assists.
Lozano caught the eye at the World Cup back in the summer, even scoring against the reigning champions Germany – he is unquestionably one of the hottest prospects in Europe, and Liverpool cannot let a title rival get their hands on a player who will most likely become world-class.
Why do Liverpool need him?
For all the depth in Jurgen Klopp’s team in midfield and in defence, it is in the attacking areas, mostly the area in which Mane plays on the left wing, that needs some added reinforcement.
The Senegal forward’s complacency has been evident for all to see in the current campaign as a result of the lack of pressure for his position. Mane, despite his eight strikes in all competitions heading into this weekend, has been extremely wasteful and inconsistent in front of goal this season.
If Lozano were to arrive at Anfield, it would be the first time in the former Southampton man’s career at Anfield that he will feel like he needs to perform even better if he is to stay in the team.
As we’ve seen with Pep Guardiola and Manchester City recently and their troubles without Fernandinho, failing to sign adequate cover for one of your star players can easily come back to bite you on the backside – Klopp should be wary of resting on his laurels and should ensure his star-studded squad remains fresh.
