Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Brentford shot-stopper David Raya in the summer, with the north London outfit monitoring the Spaniard’s situation before the transfer window re-opens for business…
What’s the latest on Tottenham’s interest in David Raya?
Speaking to Football FanCast this week, journalist Pete O’Rourke provided an update on the situation.
“Tottenham will be closely monitoring David Raya’s situation at Brentford, along with several other clubs.
“Raya has been sensational for Brentford since they’ve come into the Premier League. He’s one of the modern-day goalkeepers; very comfortable with the ball at his feet and can start attacks as well.
“I think his stats are right up there amongst the best in the Premier League, so getting some of that could only benefit Spurs.”
Is David Raya a good signing for Tottenham?
The Lilywhites are clearly in the market for a replacement for Hugo Lloris, who is currently out with a long-term injury, though his recent form at the age of 36 is what could see the club move on from the captain after 11 years.
Lloris leads the top-flight for errors leading to a goal and his mistakes have cost Spurs against the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester City and Arsenal in 2023 alone, with some suggesting that he’s now more of a “liability” than the “world-class” keeper he once was.
Raya is certainly an interesting candidate to succeed the long-serving veteran, especially after O’Rourke suggested to GiveMeSport that the Barcelona-born 27-year-old is “probably an upgrade on Lloris.”
Not only is the Bees goalie excellent with his passing range, having been praised by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp – who said: “Their goalie should have number 10 on his shirt with the balls that he played” – but he also is a formidable shot-stopper, ranking inside the top 9% for save percentage when compared to his positional peers across Europe’s ‘big five,’ via FBref.
He also ranks amongst the top 7% for crosses stopped and the top 7% for touches, all three metrics far exceed that of Lloris over the past year.
It means the “incredible” Raya – as once hailed by The Athletic’s Jay Harris – would be quite a strong signing in the summer as he has all the assets to not only challenge the Spurs star but also take the gloves from him, sooner rather than later.
As such, sporting director Fabio Paratici could do little wrong in launching a move for the £40m-valued titan when the transfer window opens at the end of the current campaign.
